Wetland Clean-up and Tree Planting

On June 7, 2025, Voices of Change led a powerful community restoration event at the Manguo Wetlands in Limuru, Kenya — a day grounded in ecological action, environmental learning, and collective responsibility.

The Manguo Wetlands are a vital freshwater ecosystem that support biodiversity, regulate local climate, and serve as a natural filtration system for surrounding communities. But like many wetlands across the country, Manguo faces increasing threats from pollution, encroachment, and years of underinvestment.

In response, Voices of Change mobilized over 100 participants — including local youth, elders, educators, and environmental leaders — for a full-day event aimed at reviving the site and re-engaging the community in its protection.

The day began with a guided walk through the wetland, allowing participants to observe the current state of the landscape and reflect on its ecological significance. This was followed by a hands-on clean-up, where participants collected and removed trash and litter from key access points and degraded areas.

After the clean-up, participants gathered for a community dialogue session. Local residents shared their memories of the wetland, voiced concerns about its future, and expressed hope for its restoration. This exchange was central to the day — affirming that conservation efforts are most impactful when they are shaped by those who live closest to the land.

The event culminated in tree planting, with dozens of native seedlings placed in designated buffer zones around the wetland. These species were selected to support water retention, soil stabilization, and long-term ecosystem recovery.

This restoration day was not a one-off activity, but part of Voices of Change’s broader work connecting youth-led environmental action with education, cultural storytelling, and policy engagement. By anchoring restoration in both science and community voice, the organization is helping reshape what inclusive, grassroots climate leadership can look like.

What’s Next?
Voices of Change will continue working with local schools, partners, and county officials to support the ongoing restoration of Manguo Wetlands. Plans are underway for future learning sessions, youth-led monitoring efforts, and policy engagement to strengthen wetland protection at the local level.
